Hard times are upon us. It's hard to believe that just over a week ago, our local shops were open, the wine was flowing, and the coffee was percolating. A momentary pause was hovering over the Finger Lakes; we didn't know what to do. Everything was changing, and change continued to come in to play. Fellow businesses have had to adapt to new methods of distribution and carry-out services. Last week Stefan and I decided we would order food from FLX Frybird through there newly minted, take-out option. While waiting in the car, I scrolled through Instagram. I noticed that The Linden Social Club, another small business of the Finger Lakes, was offering to-go cocktails Stefan called and placed our order. We picked up our cocktails and our chicken, and then we headed home. Is this the new normal? How long can this sustain?
The Finger Lakes and the businesses that bolster this community feel like ghost towns. However, one platform that seems busier than ever is our Social Media accounts. Flash sales, owner remarks, to-go/pick up instructions are all over. As of now, it seems to be working up some great local support and awareness, and we are settling into this new normal; there's an increasing optimism throughout the region.
One example of this would be the recent venture that took place at a local winery on Seneca Lake this past week. Cassandra Clack of the Three Brothers Winery and Estates Management team has coined the term and created a #localmotion. The first #localmotion was a 70 car line up of staff as well as friends of Three Brothers with to-go orders, boosting the sales for Three Brothers and giving a much-needed boost in morale for that company. Clack has been looking to bring her #localmotion to other business in Geneva and The Finger Lakes. Knowing Clack personally, I can say she is a go-getter, and I cannot wait to see what she does next!
So what's the take away of this rambling post? It may be easier said than done, but it's simple:
support, support each other, support local business, support yourselves, and support the Finger Lakes.
Heres a quick list of local favorites that are currently offering take-outs, pick-ups, and shipping during this time.
Three Brothers Winery and Estates - Pick-up orders (yes, that includes slushies!) Thursday-Sunday 12noon-4pm. Shipping specials are updated frequently. https://www.shopthreebros.com
Hermann J. Weimer & Standing Stone Vineyards - A local favorite is offering $1 shipping on orders of 6bottles or more, and Vineyard Side Pick-Up 7 days a week.
The Waste Not Shop - This is the hidden gem of Geneva that still has toilet tissue and soap in stock. Shop owner Marilla also has a great selection of dry goods. Pick-up or shipping available.
FLX. Fry Bird - Maddie and the team are serving up daily take-out specials and local delivery within a 10mile radius. I highly recommended the Hot Chicken!
The Liden Social Club - "A pretty bar, we are, with a big personality in our drinks... We can bring it to you or make them available for pick-up. One hour turnaround time at most #smalltown! 315-521-6000 for Joe, he's literally just doing puzzles waiting for your text or call." Check out their Spring Menu, each of these drinks directly supports a charity such as FLX Pride, Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty, and The World Wildlife Foundation.
Cheers everyone, we can do this!
